There are many reasons why I'm an avid Mac user. I have a slightly deserved reputation for sleeping through alarms of the bedside clock variety, which is why I love that I can use my iMac as an incredibly loud alarm clock. Via the Energy Saver control panel (System Preferences>>Energy Saver>>Schedule), I can set a time for my iMac to start up or shut down. And, by selecting a particular mp3 file to play on startup (System Preferences>>Accounts>>Login Items) and cranking the volume up to 11 (which is one more than 10, you know), iTunes will launch at startup and play the file once the iMac is up and running. Because my desk is on the other side of the room, I'm forced to get up and turn down the volume. Although, I never do, because I prefer my music loud.

This week's wake-up song has been 1994's dance sensation "Free" by Ultra Nate. (No relation to the better known and lovely scented Jean Nate.) Because I like loud music, and because I'm damn lazy, I still linger in bed, even after the Mac startup "bong!" and after the music starts playing. In "Free," however, the line "Make that change, let's start today/ Get out of bed, get on your way" forces me to smile, surrender, and find the energy to toss the covers aside.
