dress you up

Welcome back to LJ Runway Monday!

Dress Two: Organic cocktail dress challenge. Our challenge was to use "green fabrics" procured by our models to design a cocktail dress to suit their needs.

In the work room: Nikki returned from Mood with black ahimsa silk, pink organic satin, and white silk tulle netting. I wasn't excited about the pink satin, because I'd used so much pink in the last challenge. Nikki was more excited about the black silk anyway, because ahimsa silk is harvested from silk moths and doesn't kill larvae. Don't tell her I said this, but--for all her bravado--Nikki doesn't like to hurt living things. I put the satin aside and worked with the black silk for a long time. Unfortunately, while fitting the dress on Nikki, there was a mishap because it was too tight. While we were struggling to get her out of it, Nikki was unfortunately launched across the work room. She ricocheted off a cabinet and broke her hip. The dress ripped beyond repair and I was forced to remake the dress as quickly as possible with the pink satin.

Inspiration: Jewelry box ballerina gets on board the booze cruise.

Inspiration: Nikki wanted simplicity. "Clean lines, but it has to make me look hot." That was her only direction. I wanted the dress to be pretty, but I didn't want it to be a dress that made someone look at the dress before they looked at Nikki. I wanted her to wear the dress, and not the other way around. (I feel lucky that the black dress was destroyed, because it was turning into a dress that would've worn Nikki.) Although I didn't want to use the pink satin, I was happy with the way the dress turned out, because it feels like a natural progression from the dress in the last challenge.

Nikki: It's exactly what I wanted. I'd definitely wear this to a party, out to dinner, to the symphony, or to a block party barbecue!
Tim: (whispering) You're so hip it hurts.
