Our friend L____ had to go out of town rather suddenly, so Becky and I are in the 'burbs once again, taking care of dogs and watching the house. Against my better judgement, I brought Rex along, in spite of the fact that he tried to run away from me right before we left when I was loading the car with our bags. I found him on the next block, peeing on someone's shrubbery. I had to make one of those split second parenting decisions: Do I beat him now? Or wait until we get home?

He's been good ever since then. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I've been whispering, "I could leave you here," into his ear nightly before we go to bed.

One of the dogs we're taking care of is a youthfully exuberant Doberman male who has yet to be neutered. Rex has been steering clear of this dog ever since we caught him trying to hump an old bath rug.

Our laptops are set up in the breakfast room so we can work on TJB#5, which is due to our editor in twelve days. Pardon me while I go scream in the other room.
