rex, month two

Rex has lived with us for two months now. He's been very good about helping out around the house. He helps me write. He helps Becky cook. He cleans the floors. He keeps Margot and Guinness on their toes. He guards the house, making certain nobody will come here and make me leave it. He holds down the carpet when he naps. He's a giver.

Rex and Lazlo are buddies now. Oh, sure, every now and then there's hissing. But for the most part they hang out and watch television together. They've bonded over Nick at Nite. Rex has learned to be very cautious around cats now. He'll creep forward, very tentatively, and touch noses with Lazlo. His eyes are always wild and you can almost hear Rex thinking, Is this okay? Am I going to die now? Gee, your fur smells terrific.

The girl dogs...oy. Guinness still gets shrieky when he tries to play with her, but Guinness is always kind of shrill. I think it's safe to say that Guinness is starting to like Rex. Margot, on the other hand, is insane, which makes her harder to read. She still snaps at him, but her tail will be wagging at the same time, as if to tell us that ripping Rex's jugular open is so much fun that we should give it a try and this is how she's always played, didn't we ever notice? The good thing is that Rex seems to be understanding that the girl dogs have their limits, and isn't constantly bothering them to play. I was going to say "harassing" instead of "bothering," but I'm all for harassment.

It looks as though Rex is here to stay, but we'll see. His three month probation isn't quite over yet. After that, we'll discuss vacation days. But no sick days, please.
