women in uniform

Welcome back to LJ Runway Monday!

Dress Four: On Project Runway, the challenge was to design a uniform for women of team USA to wear to the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. They were told that the athlete should project the image of the U.S. to the world and look proud to represent her country. LJ Runway's Heidi Gunn issued the same challenge to us.

Inspiration: The challenge itself was inspiration; imagining a team of women who have worked hard to be the best, are thrilled to represent our country, and are ready to compete against the greatest athletes the world over is a powerful image.

About the design: The opening ceremony of the Olympics is all about presentation and representation. It's not like the team is going to compete in the outfit, so I wanted to create a sleek uniform that would present the women of the American team as a powerful, yet chic, unit. Using navy American cotton, I created a jacket for the opening ceremony that the team might feel comfortable wearing to other functions as well. I also made a pair of shorts using the same material.

Nikki: I like the star closures. They make me feel like the star that I am!

Tim: Thank you!
