Welcome back to LJ Runway Monday!

Dress Three: On Project Runway, the challenge was to design a dress for going out on the town inspired by a photograph of New York City. For LJ Runway, our surprise twist was that our destination has been changed to New Orleans.

Inspiration: When Heidi Gunn told us that we were to draw inspiration from a photograph of New Orleans, I immediately thought of the cobblestone streets in the French Quarter, seen here. (Not my photo, so I don't feel right downloading and posting it in my LJ. Sorry.)

I found a lovely print at Mood that reminded me of old stone sidewalks and streets with a modern twist, so I used that to create a gorgeous outfit for Nikki.

"...the three emerged into the brilliant April morning sunshine of Rampart Street. Over all New Orleans there hung the pungent redolence that was the very flavor of the bewitching city.

First, as always, the heavy air bore the scent of coffee pervading everything like an incense wafted from the great wharves and roasting ovens. Over and under and around this dominant odor were other smells, salty, astringent, or exotic…. The smell of an old and carnal city, of a worldly and fascinating city….

Any one of the three, as they set out this Sunday morning, would have been enough to attract attention on the streets of New Orleans, sophisticated though the city was….

They were on their way to the French Market, these three, on a fine, hot, humid New Orleans Sunday morning…."

From Saratoga Trunk, by Edna Ferber.

About the design: I needed a break from cocktail dresses, or dresses of any kind. I wanted to do seperates, a skirt and a top, which I thought would suit the challenge perfectly, because how many women want to wear a dress when they're out for a night on the town in New Orleans?

Nikki: Not me! Because whenever I'm at some fabulous club, listening to jazz, in a dress that's dry clean only, lookin' hot and feelin' fine, some dumbass bastard always spills something on me!

Tim: See?

Where she's wearing this outfit: Nikki's wearing her skirt and top while dining at a fine restaurant with her agent. When dessert arrives, she'll fire him. Afterward, she'll meet her boyfriend at a club. He'll remark on how sexy her bustier top is, and show her how it provides easy access to her breasts. She'll break up with him and then spot one of her friends at the bar. After downing a few shots and picking up two sailors, it's off to another club, and then on to coffee with her sailor boy. Will they have breakfast, or go back to Nikki's hotel room? Either way, Nikki knows she'll look fabulous, because her outfit looks just as good in the early morning daylight as it did last night.
